From chemical engineering to public health: Interview with Professor Wang Qiusen

Planning the / Chang-Chuan Chan (College of Public Health Occupational Medicine and Industrial Hygiene Institute)

Interview / Yi-Ping Lin (College of Public Health, Institute of Health Policy and Management PhD)

1960 graduated from the Chemical Engineering Department of Wang Qiusen alumni, thirty years dedicated to the study of air pollution control, never stopped. After he left Taiwan for many years, returned to Taiwan to teach, in between 1993 to 1996 served as Head of the Department of Public Health, School of Public Health from 1996 to 1999 served as dean.

Professor Wang Qiusen research topics "aerosols" (Aerosol) is designed with microscopic precision, from the early Coarse and fine particle size to ultrafine particles, along with advances in measurement tools, their concerns aerosols particle size smaller; But he has long been the subject of concern, from air pollution, environmental protection, Taiwan's democracy movement, to public health, vision, concept of university education and so on, but it is broad and macro, and increasingly The more open.

"In fact, from chemical engineering to public health, for me, is a very natural way to do!" Professor Wang Qiusen thinking about his learning process, so the opening.

Research into the field of aerosol

Professor Wang Qiusen in 1954, graduated first in his class Taichung First, there was no choice walks Faculty of Medicine, Department of Chemical Engineering has chosen, the main causes and Professor Wang's father, Mr. Wang Wenyi do tires, open shoes factories, rubber and chemical raw materials research and development are closely related. But after thirty years, halfway around the world, once again returned to Taiwan, Professor Wang has settled on was still in medical school of public health at. "The human personality and interests will determine the trajectory of one's life, see, somewhere its own arrangements, you finally went to medical school!" Professor Wang Lu Kuang Taichung, one of the students smoked MD (Department of Medicine graduating in 1963), once this to Professor Wang said.

Professor Wang Qiusen will enter the field of public health research, the underlying cause, and his background, and has long been concerned with the environment, but the proximate cause is he in 1963 at Kansas State University Chemical Master into Caltech Ph.D. In Fu Lilan Germany (SK Friedlander), chaired by Professor aerosols laboratory research with the rules.

Professor Fu Lilan Germany originally taught at Johns Hopkins University, 1963 go to the California Institute of Technology, is the Department of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Health Engineering (Environmental Health Engineering) Adjunct Professor, Professor Wang Qiusen year because of the mathematical model are interested, and became Professor Fu Lilan Germany PhD student in theoretical particle size distribution theory and cemented the title PhD in 1966.

1960 United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has not been established, air pollution related research, monitoring and control, part of the U.S. Department of Public Health (Public Health Services), Professor Fu Lilan Germany active in an early investment in the sector of air pollution-related research Committee. In Los Angeles California Institute of Technology in airborne particulate studies, in fact, there is the geographical reasons, because then Los Angeles is America's most serious urban air pollution, "As a resident of Los Angeles, even I are deeply hurt by it ! "Professor Wang Qiusen have allergies such memories.

You don't sound serious

Have you ever studied or read about some of the great lawyers in american history. many of them went to no-name schools.
as for university of phoenix, that's nothing to scoff at. apollo is a very successful company and is run by top-tier educators. the graduates they are turning out would never have gotten as far as they did by any other means because those means didn't exist until apollo invented them. several other companies have done quite a bit also, and there are about a dozen of them. they are paving the way for what will inevitably one day be online education at every level, which incidentally the so-called "top tier" schools are already doing in large part, especially at yale, in case you don't know that
