Law school? No letters of rec, low GPA?
I graduated from a private college in NY with a low GPA. I am studying for the LSAT and I think I can score in the 155-162 range. I received my undergrad degree about 5 years ago. I have 5 years experience with a well-respected Fortune 500 company in their marketing department.
I am researching law schools in the NY area and I am realizing that my GPA is going to hurt my chances of getting into certain schools. I was not very dedicated to my studies 5-9 years ago -- I have changed my tune and have done much maturing.
My low GPA is compounded by the fact that I do not keep in touch with any professors from undergrad, nor was I close with any of them
Not from CUNY, but...
I have lots of friends and colleagues who went there. There are a couple of aspects which factor into the (sometimes) bad rep that CUNY gets--
1. They're not selective in their applicants.
2. They have a low bar pass rate.
I suppose these two things may be related. However, CUNY's strength really does lie in its dedication to public interest work and its extensive clinics that provide real-world experience. There are lots of lawyers at Legal Aid in NY who went to CUNY.
In my own experience, I can tell you that public interest employers base their hiring decisions upon elements that aren't necessarily viewed as relevant or as important with big firm employers
