The politics of philosophy PhD programs

Is about accepting enough students to support the philosophy graduate department (pay the professors.)
For this to happen, they have to produce more PhD's than there are teaching jobs.
The best teaching jobs are in the top universities and only a few students get those.
It sounds like you are trying to play your own version of the musical chairs of getting a teaching job at a top university.
The normal way to do this is to find a professor you like and prove to him that you are one of the top students in the department, that you love philosophy and you are willing to devote your life to it
